Find Support
Find a group of people to help bring Radio Free to your area.  Ask your friends, co-workers, parents and grandparents to help you plan and execute your fundraising.  It only takes a few people to reach a lot of people so don’t be afraid if you only have a few friends who are passionate and want to help.

If your local support group is unaware of Radio Free explain to them the great advantages of community media.  Each community is unique. Find out about the local media environment and learn from activists who are doing like-minded work.  Connect with local media reform, independent media, and peace and justice groups that might already be working in your area, to build support for your campaign.

You can findmedia reform groups in your area at freepress.net

You can findpeace and justice groups in your area at unitedforpeace.org.

In order to have the people-power to enact and sustain a campaign to bring Radio Free to your area, you will need to generate widespread support for Radio Free. To raise awareness and get more people involved, spread the word and build alliances.

Fundraise
It costs about $4,000 to start a community station and about $1,500 a year to maintain.  While it may sound like a monumental task to raise this amount of money, rest assured that we are here to help with that task.  Keep in mind that Radio Free only accepts donations from individuals (not businesses) to keep true to our core values as a news provider.

Remember
It only takes 30 people to pledge their support of $50 a year to reach the fundraising goal of $1500 to maintain the station for an entire year.  For the initial funding of $4,000 to start the station it only takes those same 30 people pledging an additional amount of $135 for the first year.

Reach Out!
With your local support team you have put together it might only take a few weeks or months to raise the money necessary to bring Radio Free to your community.  Feel free to use this flyer to help (Radio Free Flyer).  Here are a few Ideas to help you with your fundraising.

Hold a rummage sale with donated items
This is a great way to raise a lot of money. Get people to donate extra items (the kind of stuff that lies around collecting dust in the garage) and hold a giant sale. Be sure to advertise the rummage sale so that lots of people will come. With donated items, you’ll be able to raise lots of money very quickly and remaining items can be returned or passed on to thrift stores.

Be handymen (and women)
Get you and your local support team together and sell vouchers for handymen services. You can mow lawns, change light bulbs, or paint a small room. You can sell these vouchers door-to-door or through your place of business.

Get The Community Involved
