While the Democratic presidential candidates sparred in a debate in Des Moines, Iowa, on Tuesday, protesters mobilized outside the debate venue at Drake University demanding a televised debate focused on poverty. “Republicans tend to racialize poverty, Democrats tend to run from it — we must deal with the reality of poverty,” says Reverend William Barber of the Poor People’s Campaign, who was at the forefront of the demonstration on Tuesday. “We have people who work for less than living wages who live in their cars and work every day. This is a travesty in America. That is why we are not going to be silent anymore. That is why people are rising up.”
