NEW YORK – Following Senate Republicans voting to block witnesses in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Stand Up America Founder and President Sean Eldridge released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans have thrown all democratic norms and decades of precedent out of the window by preventing witnesses from testifying before the Senate. This is an abhorrent dereliction of duty.
“A vast majority of the American people wanted the Senate to call witnesses, including former National Security Advisor John Bolton. Hundreds of thousands of constituents called their senators to demand a fair trial with witnesses. And yet, Senate Republicans have now helped cover up Trump’s crimes.
“Should Senate Republicans vote to ‘acquit’ Donald Trump, this trial will be seen by the American public as a sham and a cover-up.”
Earlier this year, Stand Up America launched a six-figure organizing campaign demanding that every senator vote to convict Donald Trump. The campaign put pressure on key senators to vote in favor of calling firsthand witnesses like John Bolton.
In the last month, Stand Up America has driven over 130,000 constituent calls to senators from every state, including over a hundred thousand to the offices of key Republican senators, like Alexander (R-TN), Collins (R-ME), Gardner (R-CO), McSally (R-AZ), Murkowski (R-AK), Portman (R-OH), Romney (R-UT), and thousands more to Democratic senators like Jones (D-AL), Manchin (D-WV), and Sinema (D-AZ).
