Tuesday night’s State of the Union address was rife with contradictions. Rep. Nancy Pelosi ripped up President Trump’s speech on camera in an act of defiance — but the House Speaker joined Trump and other Republicans in applauding Juan Guaidó, the opposition leader of the U.S.-backed coup attempt in Venezuela. “The Democrats use the same playbook as the Republicans,” says writer Roberto Lovato. “At the core level of foreign policy, militarism and staging coups and economic neoliberalism, there isn’t that much of a difference.” Lovato argues that Trump trotted out Guaidó during his speech as a bulwark against the spectre of socialism embodied in “the Sanders threat,” whose campaign represents a threat to the establishment core of both parties.
