U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has said a draft U.S. agreement with the Taliban to reduce violence in Afghanistan “looks very promising.” The deal was negotiated by the U.S. special peace envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad. Esper spoke at the Munich Security Conference on February 15. At the same event, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance needed to reduce its presence in Afghanistan “in a responsible way.”
