Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan says that grassroots organizing made the Squad’s election to Congress possible. “We ran with no corporate PAC money,” says Tlaib on a panel alongside Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley. “We ran talking about our immigrant stories, our backgrounds, our parents.” Tlaib discusses how her Detroit working-class upbringing in a “UAW household” continues to influence her work as a lawmaker. “You were part of one family — the UAW, right?” says Tlaib. “You organized, and it was one big organization against the corporate greed, pushing back and saying, ‘I deserve human dignity, I deserve to be able to take care of my family.'”
