The jury is beginning deliberations in New York City on whether to find disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein guilty of sexual assault. Weinstein is currently facing five charges including first and third degree rape based on evidence from two main accusers, but has faced sexual assault allegations from over 100 women throughout the #MeToo movement. We spoke with New York magazine senior correspondent Irin Carmon who has been following the allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Despite being seen as an “untouchable monster” who has become almost “synonymous” with the #MeToo movement, this case is much more complicated than expected, says Carmon. “The jury is being asked to understand something that experts will tell you is typical but that society does not generally understand, which is how can it be that on one day somebody basically assaults you but then further down the line, you continue to have consensual contact with them?” says Carmon. “This is a man who helped so much economic power in the industry, a man who they saw as holding the keys to their future. … They were terrified of him.”
