Jesus, we wish the ever-appalling Susan Collins would go home already. Instead, in recent days she’s repeatedly committed the sort of crimes against honesty, decency and decisiveness for which she’s become self-parody-level famous. In a Saturday night speech at a GOP dinner from which journalists were barred, Collins welcomed racist, moron, mini-Trumpster, “human bowling jacket” (with thanks to Charlie Pierce) and former Gov. Paul Lepage, who’s said to be considering re-sullying our state with his trashy presence. “Gov. LePage is back!” she reportedly announced to “cheering and applause.” Collins endorsed and fundraised for LePage in his 2010 and 2014 runs for governor; once in office, he did things like explain Maine’s deadly heroin epidemic by blaming “guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty” who come here, sell drugs and “impregnate young white girls…which is a real sad thing.” Other sad things: At the dinner, Collins whined about dark money ads by her opponents that reach “new depths of falsehood” while failing to mention she cast the deciding vote a decade ago to allow those ads; defended her lies about the 2017 tax scam she voted for, with ongoing disastrous effects; and complained “the far left says Republicans are not pro-women” before retorting, “Hello? Have you heard of Margaret Chase Smith, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins?” because, hello, what drunken, lying rapist on the Supreme Court?
Still, she said, she believes Mainers will re-elect her for her well-known commitment to “the values we hold dear.” Those values were again on display Tuesday, when Moscow Mitch and his GOP gang of goons spent their time, not attending to threats to national security and fair elections, or a Coronavirus pandemic we’re ill-prepared for, or thousands of children languishing in cages, or hundreds of House bills collecting dust in the Senate, but trying to fire up their misogynistic base by debating two extreme anti-abortion bills based on universally rejected medical myths. Always threading the needle, Collins voted against one – a 20-week abortion ban called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. But because she already betrayed generations of women with her Kavanaugh vote so what the hell, she up and voted for the second – the particularly cruel, surreally named “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” She also pulled her classic “troubled” shtick on the subject of Trump’s entirely unqualified pick for national intelligence – and prompted another laughable headline about breaking with Trump – by saying she “would have much preferred” someone else. Yes, she even furrowed her contemptible brow. Little wonder, then, that the day also brought new poll results showing the once-heavily-favored Collins is now tied with, or a point behind, her most likely Democratic rival. Do help us get rid of her here or here. If we succeed, she will undoubtedly be “very disappointed.” Ask us if we care.
