Rev. Dr. William Barber: We need to center poverty in building antiracist policies

On Super Tuesday, 14 U.S. states and American Samoa held their primaries for the Democratic presidential nomination. While Senator Bernie Sanders won the biggest prize of the night, California, with strong support in the Latinx community, he failed to make significant inroads with Black voters in the South, who overwhelmingly broke for former Vice President Joe Biden. Rev. Dr. William Barber, co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, says much of the discussion about race in the 2020 election neglects to take poverty into account. He says that addressing systemic racism, systemic poverty and other social justice issues as part of the same system can bring white, Black and Latinx voters together for change. “It’s not so much race or class, but it’s race and class,” Barber says.
