With armed right-wing extremists becoming a regular feature of anti-lockdown protests in several states across the United States, Juan González says the country is “edging closer and closer to neo-fascist authoritarianism” under Donald Trump, who has tacitly approved of the rallies. “If hundreds of African Americans or Latinos showed up in cities around the country brandishing automatic weapons, what would be the response of the country to this?” the Democracy Now! co-host asks. “Why is this being almost accepted and normalized now as a method of protest?” He also warns of a potential scenario in which Trump loses the November election and refuses to concede, and how that could mobilize these same supporters of his into action. “Some people may say this is far-fetched. I hope it is. But I think that we shouldn’t delude ourselves that we are living in extraordinary times in the United States right now.”
