QUITTING WEWORK
WeWork CEO Adam Neumann wanted to revolutionize the real estate industry by building a network of co-working spaces on a massive scale. The company was valued at $47 billion when it tried to go public, but that value plummeted after WeWork’s shaky financial foundations and Neumann’s excesses were fully exposed. Mass layoffs ensued as Neumann left with a golden parachute. VICE correspondent Seb Walker examines the spectacular rise and fall of WeWork, and delves into the world of venture capitalists willing to gamble billions on the next big startup.
LOSING GROUND
In the years after the Civil War, African-Americans were able to acquire land and by 1910, they held an estimated 16 million acres. After decades of legal discrimination and violence, the ownership mostly vanished. But for families who have retained this property, many have to navigate a murky kind of ownership shared among many family members with no safeguards against exploitation by developers. VICE correspondent Alzo Slade explores the vulnerability many black land owners face as they try to retain their piece of the American dream.
ITALY’S DARKEST HOUR
Italy was the first European country to report a massive cluster of COVID-19 cases after the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China. But it may have been spreading through the country undetected for days or even weeks before the nation’s officials were fully aware. Some of Italy’s richest regions have since been devastated by the virus. Official data says more than 21,000 people have died so far – but the actual death toll could be much higher. VICE correspondent, Isobel Yeung, witnessed firsthand a healthcare system in crisis, gaining rare access to an ICU overwhelmed by COVID-19.
