Naomi Klein warns of the potential dangers of mass surveillance in containing the spread of COVID-19 in the U.S. “I think there is absolutely a role, an important role, for technology in figuring out how we’re going to live under these extraordinary circumstances,” she says. “The question is whether tech companies and government get the kind of carte blanche … to massively invade our privacy. Where is this data going to be stored? Who is going to have access to it?” Klein adds that while narratives about countries who have successfully controlled the virus emphasize the importance of these surveillance technologies, these narratives also erase the crucial role of functioning public health systems in these countries, which the U.S. lacks.
