Kudos to the Dem activists and hive minds who came up with Defeat by Tweet, a new independent super PAC that makes Trump pay for every vile, lying, hateful scrap of bile he spews – with grassroots racial justice groups the recipients of his unwitting largesse. The way it works: For every repugnant tweet, you can donate a cent or five, up to a buck or more, in the impeached president’s name to the Justice Fund, a consortium of about 20 black-led organizations working on criminal justice reform, voting rights, local elections and other key issues in nine swing states. The groups, vetted through a partnership with the Movement Voter PAC, include Color of Change, The Collective, Black Voters Matter Fund, Faith in Action Fund, Electoral Justice Project, etc.
Trump averages 30 tweets a day, or about 900 a month; a million people ponying up a modest donation of 2¢ per tweet will net $18 million a month to help Trump defeat himself – and also save democracy. A contingency plan for raging Tweetstorms caps monthly donations at the amount of your choosing, or an automatic $45 a month; there are no fees, but tips are requested to keep things running. Defeat by Tweet is the brainchild of Xander Schultz, a tech executive and longtime criminal justice reform advocate who hopes it will help mobilize black political power for those long lacking a voice – and make Trump pay for his animus. “The more you spread hate,” he notes, “the worse your reelection odds will become.” Oh sweet, pricey accountability. Maybe “the blacks” really will love him now.
