Under a shocking new Trump administration policy, hundreds of people who came to the United States seeking asylum were secretly held in hotels for days on end before being expelled from the country, often with little or no paper trail. Between April and the end of June, more than 200 unaccompanied immigrant children — including babies and toddlers — were held in hotels and then expelled. Zenén Jaimes Pérez, advocacy director with the Texas Civil Rights Project, says that hotels and other sites such as these operate as “black sites.” “Whether they are at a Hilton, Ritz-Carlton or even one of the government prisons,” says Pérez, “the wider picture is there is no oversight, no accountability to what is going on.”
