We Will Be There

Long day, and night, and month. But despite the raging pandemic and endless lines and harrowing wait for results – like the country just got a biopsy – Election Day brimmed with all the jubilant defiance of the viral lanky guy in line to vote early in Philly leading a dance in his “Fuck 2020” t-shirt. Even as Trump hid inside his secure facility behind his wire fences, there was music, hope, food, a sense of community thanks to determined groups like the black sorority sisters of Stroll To the Polls, voting rights activists of Joy To the Polls, and fire and brimstone of Resistance Revival Chorus. Their message: “Nothing and no one is getting in the way of our joy and our vote.” En route, they were feted and fed by the indefatigable founder of World Central Kitchen Chef José Andrés – “Smart solutions to hunger and poverty” – who set up Chefs for the Polls to ensure people didn’t go hungry while waiting in line. Partnering with restaurants across the country, Andrés and his cadre of volunteers in 250 cities gave out about 500,000 free meals – mac and cheese in New York, build-your-own nachos in Milwaukee, Luke’s Lobster here in Portland. “We all are Citizens of the World. What’s good for you, must be good for all,” Andrés declares in his intro. And, Tom-Joad-like, he always shows up, whether for hurricanes or flailing democracy. “Wherever there is a fight so that hungry people may eat,” he vows, “we will be there.” Be like Chef José: We may all have to keep showing up for a while.
