WASHINGTON – With 50 days until the May 1st deadline to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft launched today its Count Us Out social media countdown to the deadline.
On February 29, 2020, the US signed an agreement in Doha, Qatar, in which an initial reduction of troops followed by a full withdrawal on May 1, 2021 was promised if the Taliban keeps its commitments. Yet, since taking office, Biden has signaled that his administration is reviewing the deal and it is unclear if they will abide by the original commitment.
