WASHINGTON – Today, the Senate introduced S.1, otherwise known as the For the People Act, a sweeping package of democracy reforms that begin to rebalance our political system to focus on voters and constituents instead of monied interests. The Patriotic Millionaires could not be more proud to support this legislation.
The For the People Act fights the corruptive influence of money in politics by reimagining our system for publicly financing elections and incentivizing small dollar donations, requiring more transparency from Dark Money groups, limits the power of SuperPACs, and calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court Decision. At the same time, it expands the right to vote, keeps elections secure, outlaws partisan gerrymandering and requires independent commissions to draw districts, and restores the Voting Rights Act to combat racist voter suppression efforts.
This legislation is a must-pass, and any Senator who does not support it is endorsing a democracy that is restricted, unequal, and structurally racist.
