Nicholas McQuaid was an attorney with Latham & Watkins, working at their New York office for many years. On January 21, 2021, President Joe Biden appointed McQuaid as the assistant attorney general of the United States Department of Justice. The Epoch Times reported on February 3, 2021 that McQuaid was a longtime partner of Christopher Clark, the lawyer who represented the President’s son, Hunter Biden, in his recent drug use and money laundering cases. As the article explained, Clark and McQuaid worked together on multiple cases. McQuaid, who will be overseeing all criminal investigations in the US, will have a direct tie to the Hunter Biden case, hinting at potential corruption and a potential conflict of interest.
A February 19, 2021 Washington Examiner article explains that after Republican Senators Ron Johnson (Wisconsin), and Chuck Grassley (Iowa) raised concerns about McQuaid and some of the President’s other selections for DOJ staff members, the DOJ sent the senators a letter suggesting that McQuaid had been recused from cases involving his former law firm. However, the article noted that the DOJ’s letter left some of the questions Johnson and Grassley posed unanswered. The Epoch Times reports that law firm Latham and Watkins declined Fox News’ request to comment on the collaboration between Clark and McQuaid. The Examiner reported that the Justice Department has also declined to comment on the matter.
As of February 25, 2021, the only media sources that have reported this story are the Washington Examiner, Fox News, and the New York Post. Among the corporate news outlets that have failed to cover this story are CBS, MSNBC, ABC, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR, Washington Post and AP News. Several other independent, Republican leaning sources reported the story using intense and sensational language, diminishing their credibility.
