Following the clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh on December 9, several videos have surfaced on the internet claiming to be visuals of the incident. One such video shows an injured Chinese soldier.

BJP’s Mumbai minority cell president Wasim R Khan shared the video and said, “भारत हमेशा हिंसा के ख़िलाफ़ रहा है लेकिन कोई छेड़ेगा तो भारत उसे छोड़ेगा यह भी मुमकिन नही है”. (Archive)

User @isshuklaa shared the video attacking Richa Chaddha in the context of her recent reply to Northern Army commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, which had sparked a massive row on social media. This tweet garnered 81,000 views and almost 2,000 retweets. (Archive)

User @ImRohitDwi143 shared the video with #ArunachalPradesh. His tweet garnered 34 thousand views. (Archive)

The video is also viral on Facebook.

Fact Check

On doing a reverse image search with the key-frames of the video, we found an article by The Independent dated February 26, 2021. The article contains a screen-grab of the viral video and is titled, ‘China, India urge further measures to ease border tensions’. The article talks about the foreign ministers of China and India initiating further steps to stabilize tensions along the disputed border following the pullback of forces from the area where a deadly clash broke out in the summer of 2020.

Below we have compared the image used by The Independent with a still from the viral video.

The same screen-grab was also used by Sky News in their report titled, ‘China admits for first time four of its troops were killed in 2020 India border clash’. The report dated February 20, 2021 talks about China’s first acknowledgement of casualties seven months after the mountain border clash with Indian forces. According to the report, Chinese state media also released edited footage, purported to show the stand-off.

We also found a video on YouTube by South China Morning Post titled, ‘China’s new video of deadly 2020 border clash with Indian troops in Galwan Valley’. The video is a compilation of footage of the Galwan valley clash. The viral part can be seen from 1:11 of the YouTube video.

According to a Moneycontrol report titled, ‘Galwan Valley clash | China releases visuals of bloody face-off’, the wounded man seen in the viral video is Qi Fabao.

Qi Fabao was chosen as a torchbearer in the Beijing Winter Olympics in early 2022, something that Jim Risch from US Senate Foreign Relations Committee had condemned. According to Risch, China’s decision to choose as torchbearer someone who was part of the military command that attacked India in 2020 and is implementing genocide against the Uyghurs ‘was shameful’.

Hence, a clip from the Galwan valley clash of 2020 that was released by Chinese state media in 2021 is falsely being circulated with the claim that they are visuals from the recent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh on December 9.
