WASHINGTON – Protestors will march from the BBC to Trafalgar Square on Saturday to oppose against the threat of war with Iran.
Amongst them will be senior politicians, celebrities, trade union leaders and army veterans.
The demonstration assembles at midday at the BBC in Portland Place and will arrive at Trafalgar Square at 2pm where there will be a range of speakers.
There will also be protests in towns and cities around the country.
Army veteran, Joe Glenton, said:
‘I’ve spoken to many veterans of the recent wars. We all agree that however bad those conflicts were, they would pale in comparison to the horrors unleashed by a war with Iran. It is vital to oppose the warmongers. The Stop the War national demo is the natural start point for a reinvigorated resistance. Join us to say no to war with Iran.’
Stop the War President, Brian Eno, said:
‘Is it possible that Donald Trump would foment hostilities in the Middle East to distract us from his impeachment, or as part of his re-election campaign? It seems unthinkable that anybody would do something so reckless. But this is Donald Trump, and The Republican Party. The only thing that will deter him is the knowledge that the rest of the world doesn’t want to go there with him.’
Stop the War Convenor, Lindsey German, said:
‘The assassination of Iranian General Soleimani was a provocative act that has taken us terrifyingly close to a new war in the Middle East. The situation remains critical. We need to mount maximum pressure on our government and on the Trump administration to prevent further escalation’.
