It has been one year since Elijah McClain was put into a chokehold by police officers, injected with ketamine, and sent to the hospital, where he later died. Elijah’s mother, Sheneen McClain, was previously vocal at protests. But she now says that she will not speak publicly until she has received justice for her son. She was present at the weekend celebrations of her son’s life – but she never picked up the mic.
In her stead, community organizers have stepped in to speak for her – while also making sure that the fact that the McClain family is still mourning Elijah is respected.
