New York, May 24, 2021–The Committee to Protect Journalists is pleased to announce that Gypsy Guillén Kaiser has joined CPJ as advocacy and communications director. Guillén Kaiser will be integral in CPJ’s efforts to advance press freedom globally as part of the organization’s senior leadership.
“Gypsy Guillén Kaiser joins us in this role during an especially challenging time for journalists around the world, and we look forward to having her expertise in leading our advocacy strategy,” said Robert Mahoney, CPJ deputy executive director. “Her extensive experience in defending human rights and press freedom will help strengthen CPJ’s work, and ensure we can hold power to account.”
Guillén Kaiser has worked nearly two decades with international non-governmental organizations and as a journalist. Most recently, she led strategic outreach to promote progressive family policies and to propel the Women, Peace and Security agenda at UN Women. Previously, she served as director of communications at the International Women’s Health Coalition and at Eisenhower Fellowships. Her advocacy work began with fighting corruption as the media and public relations manager at Transparency International’s secretariat in Berlin. She is returning to CPJ after heading the organization’s advocacy and communications department from 2010 to 2013.
“As journalists around the world contend with state-sanctioned misinformation, threats to their work, and attacks on their lives, I am thrilled to join CPJ in our fight to defend people’s right to factual and independent news,” Guillén Kaiser said. “Together with our partners and journalists in newsrooms and on the front lines, we will work to protect the free flow of information.”
