The Committee to Protect Journalists joined six other international and local press freedom organizations in a joint statement alerting the UN Human Rights Council on the state of press freedom in Honduras ahead of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) pre-sessions on Tuesday.
In the letter, the organizations expressed grave concern over recent attacks on journalists and media outlets—occurring within a broader context of escalating harassment, threats, criminalization, and stigmatization by state actors—outlined in a report sent to the UPR on April 7.
The report emphasizes that Honduras has one of the most complex and unstable human rights contexts in Latin America and requires immediate attention from the international community as its population heads to the polls for general election on November 30.
