MEXICO CITY May 7, 2026 — The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) joined the Inter American Press Association (SIP-IAPA) in a series of meetings with Mexico’s judicial leadership on Wednesday to address systemic impunity and the ongoing crisis of violence against the press.

The delegation, which included CPJ Américas Director José Zamora and prominent regional editors, met with Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz and the head of the Special Prosecutorial Office for Crimes against Freedom of Expression (FEADLE), Ruth Zenteno López, to propose a formal cooperation framework aimed at aligning Mexican judicial practices with Inter-American human rights standards.

The mission focused on establishing a joint working group to expedite stalled investigations and implementing specialized training for judges to better protect press freedom as a fundamental democratic pillar. By engaging directly with both the Supreme Court and federal prosecutors, CPJ and IAPA warned that institutional strengthening is the only viable path to reversing the cycle of violence and ensuring that crimes against journalists no longer go unpunished.
